GWSS 262 – LECTURE 11
Who is at Risk?
Thompson and Sherman predicted that these people would be most at risk
oWhite female athletes that focus on FORM or APPEARANCE for their scoring
oAnd/or emphasize a thin, lean, body to enhance athletic performance
Hypothesis turned out to be correct
Gender and Race:
According to the DSM IV (most recent version)
o90% of eating disorders occur in females in the general population
oThe same trend is true for athletes
In the general population, eating disorders occur far less frequently among Black women than
among White women
Similarly, the rate of disturbed eating among black female athletes is low
Thinness isn't as greatly embraced in other race cultures than white females
Type of Sport:
Athletes in sports that emphasize a THIN shape or SMALL SIZE for purposes of appearance
and/or performance appear to be at greater risk for developing disordered eating patterns
oGymnastics
oDistance running
oSwimming
oDiving
oBallet
oFigure skating
oSynchronized swimming
oRequire the body to show / score is based subjective-ishly on how you look
According to the authors, this is due to the pressure on athletes in these sports to diet or
maintain a thin shape
Wrestling:
Wrestlers are at high risk for disordered eating and pathogenic weight loss behaviors
Pressure to "make weight" or "cut weight"
oWeight classes in wrestling
oArtificially lowering weight right before weighing in
Dehydration
Trash bags / sweat suits while running a lot
Spitting
Not drinking water
No sodium
Purging
oIt's normalized
Subculture that accepts these behaviors and even encourages them
