MICROM 442 Lecture 19: Pathogenic E. coli and Shigella
Document Summary
The same amount of pathogenic e. coli can be found in cows from both groups (see slide). Growth promoters are antibiotics that hold down the pathogens. Common theme in gram negative is secretion and new dna. Species found as part of normal human flora. Lactose fermentation, indole positive (ability to convert tryptophan into the indole) Septicemia (blood poisoning, especially that caused by bacteria or their toxins) - usually following uti or gastroenteritis. Most infections are from the person"s own flora. Not easily distinguished by appearance or usual biochemical tests from each other. Responsible for 70-90% of the 7 million cases of uti and 250,000 pyelonephritis (kidney infection) Infection starts by spread of bacteria from the colon to the bladder. Most strains can cause infection but some certain groups found more often. At the tip of the pili is a protein called fimh which is responsible for the binding of pilus to the host cell via mannose receptor.
