Document Summary

Energy production and use in muscles: oxygen consumption during steady-state, submaximal exercise, concept of maximal oxygen consumption, concept of respiratory exchange ratio. Oxidative system: oxygen is used, how does our body actually process oxygen to produce atp. Steady state: you"re breathing harder but you can sustain that level of energy. Lactate production!!: used as energy source in other tissues, aerobically processed. Lactate is used aerobically: converted to pyruvate --> aerobic processes. What influences vo2 max: gender, body size, greater muscle mass tends to have higher vo2 max, age, training, we"re able to push our musculature to use more of the available oxygen and take in greater amounts. Increase the number of mitochondria in the muscle: make more atp, muscle fiber type, more fast twitch fiber, more slow twitch fiber, promotes more endurance type of success, tends to have higher vo2 max.
