Milk Production and composition

– Every 2 to 3 hours; 8-12 times per day
– 1st 6 months produce ~700 ml per day, 2nd 6 months ~600 ml/d
Components of breast milk:
• Protein
o Synthesized by breast tissue

Lactose:

Thick, yellow fluid
Contains antibodies, immune cells, and Lactobacillus bifidus factor
Provides protection to infant against infections
Facilitates the passage of meconium (dark, tart-like first bowel movement)
Mature Milk –
Easy-to-digest proteins and lactose

– Hindmilk
• More fat than foremilk
