OCEAN 101 Lecture 2: Acoustics and Biology
Document Summary
For what purpose do marine mammal use sound: predation/defense, social interaction, navigation. Snapping shrimp cavitation bubble, the sound comes from the sound of the bubble popping. Some sh use sound for courting and as a fright response. Dolphins live in social groups that have signature whistles that can be used to recognize individuals at distances of >500 m. Two groups of whales: baleen (mysticete) - more solitary. Feed on aggregations of krill, copepods, small sh. Use sound only to communicate- low frequency: toothed (odontocete) - matriarchal society. Chase and capture individual sh, squid, crabs. Echolocation uses echoes from high frequency sound pulses or clicks: whales can determine distance, angle, size, shape, etc. from sound echoes. Outgoing sound is generated by the vocal cords and projected through the melon. Incoming sound is received through the lower jaw, which transmits sound waves through a fat channel to the ear.
