Half life
• Half-life: the time it takes an initial concentration to decay by half
• 14C has a half life of approx. 5000 years
• This can be used to determine deep-ocean water age
Radiocarbon
• Pacific deep ocean water is much older than Atlantic water
• Tells us how the water in the ocean moves and circulates
• Enters the deep ocean in the North Atlantic and moves southward until it reaches
Antarctica and moves northward through the Pacific
Biological Productivity
• Dissolved Phosphorus Profile
