Emerged from ottoman/haps empires: germans invaded yugoslavia in wwii, they fell into a civil war with 3 groups fighting tito wins, serb nationalists/czecknicks, croatians/ustashis, fascists, communists (partisans led by tito) Us reaction: no dog in that fight: we don"t have any interests in it who cares who wins, want europeans to deal with it. Eventually, everyone was recognized as sovereign states: better than a serbian dominated yugoslavia, us / european community recognized in april 1992. Ethnic cleansing (1992-1995: not a civil war both sides weren"t fighting each other; it was mass murder, backed by the serbian government, all broadcasted by cnn. Us support ends 1989: radically cuts back aid (somali budget took a 25% hit, economy collapsed with this hit and a drought/crops sucked gov. failed.
