Paul kennedy, the perils of empire, washington post (april 20, 2003): what parallels does kennedy draw between britain in the early 20th century and the united. The ideas of the wwi imperialists are very similar to the us expansionist policies today. They want less influence from other countries, like germany, france and russia, want to secure. Middle eastern oil and make posts/air bases available. The region is still crisscrossed with rivalries and blood feuds between sunni and shiite muslims. Israel is hated a lot by the region, the city suffers from a lot of unemployment and the population is still increasing. The us is the greatest power in sight, but still doesn"t feel secure and spends a lot of money on armaments. It is less constrained from intervening in locations around the globe, but this comes with consequences. It feels less secure and it is stretching its military thin.
