Psych 101 Lecture Feb 7: Learning
Learning
o Change in behavior or mental processes based on experience
o Learning is flexible
Allows us to adapt to our environment
o Based on associations connections between events that occur together
Classical conditioning: connects two stimuli
Operant conditioning: connects a behavior and a consequence
Observational learning: connects behavior from others to consequences
Classical conditioning
o Learning an automatic association between two stimuli
Ex: for a cat, the sound of a can opening is paired strongly with being fed
o Behavioral response occurs in response to that association
Response is reflexive
Ex: with that same cat, the sound of a can opening causes salivation
o Ivan Pavlov
Studying digestive reflexes
A Russian physiologist who won a Nobel prize for his work in digestion
Was studying salivation in dogs when he discovered that the dogs automatically
saliated he they heard the assistat’s footsteps eause they assoiated
that with getting food
To test the theory, he used a tone on a tuning fork as the neutral
stimulus (see def. below)
o Classical conditioning requires the pairing of two stimuli to condition a response
