Dissociative disorders: breakdown of normal personality integration. Dissociation is teh process by which a portion of one"s life becomes separated or detached from one"s idnetnity or conscious. Dissociative identity disorder, did (used to be multiple personality disorder) A person responds to a stressful event with extensive but selective memory loss. Not the same as simple amnesia (lose all information in memory due to disease or injury) In dissociative amnesia, person responds with selective (can"t reach the memory) A person loses all sense of personal identity, gives up his or her customary life, wanders to a new faraway location, and establishes a new identity. Sometimes gets a new marriage, new family and then one day wakes up and realizes everything is different. : two or more separate personalities coexist in the same person. Nine times more prevalent in women than men.
