U. s. gun violence has dropped sharply since the 1990s. But levels remain far higher than in other. Roughly 30k+ deaths are gun-related per year in the us (~11k homicides) Violent victimization by strangers are down by 77% from 1993 to 2010: ~2% of rapes are committed by a stranger, ~21-27% of murders are by people we know. 68% of u. s. homicides and 51% of suicides are committed with guns (fbi 2009 and jama 2013) Racial skew in homicides: rates of victimization are 6x higher for blacks than whites, and offense rates are 8x higher, most murders are intraracial: 84% of whites were killed by whites. 93% of blacks were killed by blacks.
