What do women want?
• The challenge of female solidarity.
o An absence of female agreement. This is seen all across the world.
• Many women fight for concrete benefits in the short term rather than against patriarchy.
o Do’t see that a aerage oa thiks of her proles as the result of patriarhy.
o Do’t see a asee of feale atiis. See feale atiis ut it as’t aout
patriarchy.
• Women are more likely to support an agenda that is in line w/ local ideas about womanliness.
o Woe are ale to take o a task that does’t oflit / the traditioal role of a
mother.
• Soe oe see poer ad authority as a ed i itself, ot a ay to adae oe’s
interests in general.
• Women do not necessarily coalesce around female candidates.
Strategies
• Welfare movements: Uweso in Uganda
o Founded by the wife of the president.
o Ugada Woe’s Efforts to Sae Orphas
o Response to the HIV crisis b/c parents were dying and kids were being orphaned.
o Support for Uweso b/c this is in support of a traditional womanly role.
• Sigle issue oeets: Woe’s Peae Netork Lieria, Gree Belt Moeet Keya
o Green Belt Movement was to help women who w/ farming. Replenish that soil where
oe ere farig. Did’t say that oe should plant male crops, stuck w/
something that is safe.
• Campaigning for changes in law: Emang Basadi in Botswana
o Change laws that discriminated against women.
o Botsaa i Souther Afria so do’t hae issues like FGC.
• Appointment of women to high positions.
• Getting women elected.
• Public service campaigns on billboards, on radio, etc.
Women in Power
• Benefits:
o Visibility for women.
▪ Allows a younger generation to see themselves in that positions.
o High level of competence.
• Downsides:
o Tend not to focus o oe’s issues.
