ANT 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Socalled, Social Inequality, Human Genetic Variation
Document Summary
Most of the time it is very difficult to disentangle the effects of (1) genes, and (2) environment. But parents and their offspring usually also share a common environment. Race is often assumed to be genetic. The similarities among people who belong to the same race are often assumed to have a genetic basis. This is problematic: prevents us from seeing other important (non-genetic) factors. Example: members of the same group often experience the same prejudiced treatment. Race may not be a genetic reality, but that doesn"t mean it doesn"t exist. Race has very real effects on people"s lives. Randomly assign resumes to pairs of black. & white job applicants: both show identical work experience and education. o but one indicates recent work in a prison and lists a parole officer as a reference. Interview for 350 jobs in milwaukee (summer 2011) White applicants: no criminal history, callback 34% o. Black applicants: no criminal history, callback 14% o.
