ANT 132 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Waking Life, Mock Interview
Document Summary
Dreams are : a valid psychical phenomena, constructed by complex activity of the mind and serve a purpose, fulfilment of wishes/fears, reflection, reproduction of memories. Adult feelings of anger, resentment, abandonment, insecurity (c) children have a limited amount of knowledge and ability to articulate thoughts/desires, but this does not mean that their feelings of dream realities are simple/un-complicated. Manifest content of dreams vs. latent content ( dream-thoughts : manifest content-obvious/observable content, latent content-hidden content, distinguish meaning from dream-thoughts rather than actual content of dreams, shouldn"t read into manifest content, but instead it"s symbolic meaning (latent content) If dreams are interpreted/taken at face value, they appear nonsensical/unimportant, thus c) must delve into symbolic meanings/interpretations. Personal critiques: although some of freud"s beliefs in the important/meaning of dreams can be considered overzealous to some degree, he is not the first to highlight dream significance and/or emphasize their inherent relevant and symbolic meanings.
