BIS 10 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Cell Theory, Intermembrane Space, Atp Synthase
Document Summary
Function and health of organisms depends on function and health of its cells. Function of cells depends on proteins that are encoded in genes. All organisms are composed of one or more cells. The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization in organisms. Microscopy and technology drive new discoveries about cells. 2010s how cells move during development: how proteins interact with dna, many other discoveries. Microscopy is photography of small things (like cells). Light of one wavelength is absorbed, and light of a different wavelength is released. Filters allow us to separate different colors. Scientists can copy and reuse that gene. We have found and made additional colors. We can now make multi-color movies of cells. Resolution allows us to see objects as separate from one another. Adaptive optics have long been used in telescopes for astronomy. Applied to biology, it allows imaging of networks of neurons inside the brain of a living zebrafish.
