In order for natural selection to drive evolution: Individuals must reproduce to form the next generation. We need to have multiple generations of organisms. Individuals within a population must vary in phenotype. Must vary in phenotype in order for natural selection to be able to act on it. Individuals must pass on at least some of their traits to their offspring (inheritance) If there was no heritability of traits, it would not result in differential genes for the next generation. Individuals with different traits have differential survival or reproductive success during the struggle for existence. Traits that are heritable and that enhance survival and/or reproduction relative to other members of the population will increase in frequency from generation-to-generation, so long as a particular selective regime persists. An adaptation (noun) is a trait that increase an organism"s survival or reproductive success.
