The proposed ecological solution: managing for heterogeneity: variable stand density. Leaving some high density stands in safe areas that would allow for patches of high intensity fire. Habitat for species that require dense forest stands. Continents continually shift- resulting in vicariance, mountain building, volcanoes, and exposure of serpentine among other things.
