Document Summary
Character displacement: trait evolution stemming from selection to lessen resource competition. Relating to the trait that is mediating selection. Differences between similar species are greater in places where they co-occur; living together causes greater selection pressure for niche differentiation. Ex- finches beaks growing larger for one species and smaller for another to prevent them from eating the same size seeds, thus reducing competition. At one time species a competed with species b, but they displaced and no longer compete. If a disappears, b will not take over a"s role because they are not competing for the same resources. Resource or niche partitioning: the progress of evolution toward niche divergence as a result of interspecific competition, typically accompanied by character displacement. Positive interactions: relationships between different species that results in better growth, reproduction and/or survival for at least on species involved in the interaction without negatively affecting the other species. Can increase realized niche if abiotic stress is decreased.
