Document Summary
Che2a - lecture 12 - ch 4 balancing redox reactions + gas laws. Handout posted on class website (bring it to lecture!) First thing you do when you balance reaction find out if it"s redox or not! (assign oxidation #; if same oxidation # on both sides non-redox; even if one atom changes oxidation state redox reaction) Is this reaction redox or not: assign oxidation number (h= +1; o= -1, h2= +1, o= 2-, o2= 0) redox! Hydrogen peroxide is recommended to be stored in a dark cold place, because if exposed to light or heat they will decompose to oxygen and water. Identify the reducing oxidized, oxidizing and reduced reagent(s) in the above reaction. For oxygen to go from -1 to 2- , it means it gained an electron (+1e) For other oxygen to go from -1 to 0 it means it lost an electron (-1e) One peroxide is reducing the other and one peroxide is oxidizing the other.
