CHE 8A Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Bond Order, Trigonal Planar Molecular Geometry, Covalent Bond
Document Summary
It"s a good habit to draw lone pairs in (just in case) Useful when you don"t have a computer. Doesn"t show lines or shared atoms or lone pairs. You need to remember how many bonds each atom makes. How many bonds each atom should be making. First you write the first central atom. Then you write out what atoms are attached to that central atom. Then you write the rest in alphabetical order. Then you move on to the next central atom and repeat the process. Multiple bonds just show up as fewer attached atoms to the central atom. Convention is to read the kekule structure and condensed forms left to right (like how we read) Parentheses are used for multiple subunits or branches. Branches (required for cxhy (alkyl groups), optional for oh/nh2) Three or more repeating central atoms in a row (need to have three or more identical central atoms in a row) (optional)
