5/22/18 – LIFE BETWEEN TWO GENDERS: A PHOTOVOICE APPROACH OF BEING INTERSEXUAL IN
MEXICO
Objective
• To explore and promote–through Photovoice–a critical reflection and knowledge about gender
dysphoria from the perception of those who experience it in their daily life.
Methods
• In order to have a graphic and personal exploration of what it means to live with gender
dysphoria I the Mexican society, we used Photovoice (Voicing Our Individual and Collective
Experience).
• Photovoice is a technique of participatory action research that uses photography as a tool to
identify and represent problems and to propose solutions.
• Sample: Participants who said they had experienced or be experiencing gender dysphoria.
Results:
• 8 participants
• 5 states in Mexico
• Age: 17-28
• All single
• All register as females.
Questions:
1. How do I remember my childhood?
2. How do I think people perceive me?
3. What do I think about myself?
4. How do I think my mother, father and siblings see me?
5. How do I see myself regarding love?
6. How I which people perceive me?
7. This is something I find very difficult to deal with in my daily life?
Conclusions:
• Study provides graphical and testimonial info that contributed to a better understanding of the
key issues of distress, anxiety and depression in intersex people.
• Photovoice humanized the results and sensitized the community for the needs and demands of
respect and equality.
