Cohesion: the emotional bond among family members, degree of cohesion is a continuous dimension. Disengage | separated connected | enmeshed. People are not stuck in one spot, may move as situations arise. Disengaged: low cohesion, low emotional bond between family members, high desire for autonomy, do their own thing. Enmeshed: high cohesion, over-identification within family, not individuality. Separated: low to moderate cohesion, more autonomy than family identification, but will still have some family identification. Connected: moderate to high cohesion, more of emotional bond or more of that family identification than autonomy. To be effective as a family, you need to be in these low to moderate areas: separated and connected, cannot be too disengaged or enmeshed if you want family function. Adaptability: the ability to change power structure, role relationships, and relational rules in response to stress, rigid | structured flexible | chaotic.
