Document Summary

Def: system for taking turns in conversation. Taking your speaking turn to utter something. We can predict what someone is going to say during their speaking turn. The more and more words you say, the next words you will say become more and more limited and more predictable. Means of transferring speaking floor to next person. Self-selection (just jumping into convo) or current speaker selects next speaker. At transition point, if current speaker selects next speaker, then selected speaker is obligated to speak. At transition point, id current speaker does not selected next speaker, then self-selection technique becomes operative and someone else can speak. At transition point, if current speaker does not select next speaker, the the current speaker can continue to speak if no one else self- selects. *these rules do not include what happens if there are interruptions, but in traditional conversations interruptions shouldn"t happen anyway. Transition possibility in conversation to change speakers.
