CMN 122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Waggle Dance, Honey Bee, Animal Communication
Document Summary
Animal a communicated with animal b when. A"s behavior manipulates b"s sense organs in such a way that b"s behavior has changed. Ex: a made sound, and b reacted. Animals also use nonverbals to regulate social interaction. Ex: can communicate their attitude toward another. Ex: tell others where food is, or if there is a predator nearby. Ways to assign meaning to an animal signal. Look at the state of the signaling animal. Observe what behavior the animal is doing. Their behavior conveys a message, but we (humans) do not know what it means. Observe the response of the receiving individuals. Is the observer reacting in a particular way. Determining the meaning behind bees movement - bees communicate with movement. Cleaner fish show color communicating that they are a cleaner fish (not food) 12 owners of mudis, 12 owners of other breeds, 12 who did not own a dog. All participants could correctly classify the barks.
