Document Summary

Uses and gratifications (u & g) (blumer & katz, 1974) Many researchers focused on what media does to people, but blumer & Katz focused on what do people do w/ interpersonal technologies. We are motivated to use interpersonal technologies because they give us gratification. We think of gratification as psychological needs. Theory emphasizes that we make personal choices as a consumer during different times, to fulfill different purposes. We make diff choices among the diff technologies available. Since we have choices of diff techs, we make a personal choice. We use communication technology channels to satisfy needs or desires. We use media to satisfy our needs & desires. The link between the need gratification & communication technology selection lies within the audience member. Ex: one may go to snapchat to connect w/ others, another may go to snapchat to get info. Comes down to what gratification the person is looking for. Communication technology channels compete with other forms of communication.
