WEEK 8: INTERVIEWS AND YOUR PROFESSIONAL NETWORK
• do not say “HI, my name is…”
o leaders introduce themselves, not their names
o walk up to a person and say, “Anita Gong” with a firm handshake and eye
contact
• do not mention too much about yourself (at first)
o leaders know that others are more important than themselves
o ask about them, their career and their professional goals)
o listening helps you learn, stay curious, and be likable
• don’t say you want a job
o leaders know that long-term success is based on relationships
o share your future goals instead, letting them know the opportunities you’re
looking for in subtle way
INTERVIEWS (VIDEO)
• Preparing for the Interview:
o learn about the organization
o typical questions:
▪ what’s the hardest decision you’ve made?
▪ greatest weakness?
▪ where do you want to be in 5 years?
▪ what didn’t you like about the previous jobs?
▪ how do you spend your free time?
o tips to confidence:
▪ focus on how you add value
▪ emphasize positive attributes
▪ highlight strengths!
o Polish it up: practice, note your nonverbal, improve speaking voice/language use
▪ try to avoid “um”, “like” and stuttering
• Mediated: interview through online format
o maintain professionalism and check for any mistake
o ask questions that demonstrate your understanding of the organization and
position
o formats: treat as seriously as in person interview
▪ have a copy of your resume as well for reference
▪ thank people for their time
o phone interviews
▪ know your audience
▪ quiet location
▪ answer phone after the second ring to show you’re not too eager
▪ avoid distraction (do not drink, chew, cough, if anything, mute self)
▪ professional voice (be clear and do not rush)
