Document Summary

3 assumptions to remember when examining social networks: connections/relations matter, networks create asymmetries: information flow in networks are not equal. Opinion leaders in the center of social networks have greater power to direct discourses: quantify leaders and followers, networks have no agency but they activate mechanisms & generate emerging phenomenon. Sna = process of investigating social structures through the use of network and graph theories: dyads, triads, larger systems. 2 components: node = a unit of analysis, can be people, countries, organizations, are exogenous endogenous attributes. Are vertices/points: tie = a relation connecting 2 nodes, can have attributes (pos/neg, weight/unweight, aka edges or arcs, degree = number of ties each node has to other nodes. 2 types of networks: egocentric network = the web & characteristics of social relationships that surround a(cid:374) i(cid:374)di(cid:448)idual, fro(cid:373) fo(cid:272)al i(cid:374)di(cid:448)idual"s perspe(cid:272)ti(cid:448)e, global network = the web & characteristics of social relationships that connect everyone.
