● Discuss one theory/ framework and how it can be helpful when examining the
parent - child relationship
○ The symbolic interaction framework can help provide more clarity when
examining the parent - child relationship. Defining the meaning of certain
behaviors and communicating the symbolism within the family can
influence more understanding. If both the parents and children are able to
share and recognize symbols, there’s a greater chance they’d get along
and less risk of misinterpretation and miscommunication.
● In Chapter 1, to what degree do you think the portrayals of contemporary
American families reflect reality?
○ In chapter 1, the portrayals of contemporary American families was a good
start of representing of reality. However, it did not cover all kinds of
families. The chapter emphasized the more common family types, but it is
also important to recognize that there are additional variations of families
because each family is unique in their own way. Even if the chapter does
not elaborate on additional types of families, I think the chapter should
recognize and emphasize that the world includes many more than what’s
portrayed in the book.
