Lecture 11 - marriage, communication & planning on children. Some consider good marriage as characterized by high degrees of spousal satisfaction in the marriage combined with relationship stability. Problematic to measure spousal or marital satisfaction (yes or no questions) Researchers are beginning to study positive & negative elements of satisfaction separately. Others consider personal satisfaction or happiness of individuals within marriage as appropriate markers of a good marriage. Focus is on what personal characteristics spouses contribute to marriage. Generosity, loyalty, sacrifice, friendship, devotion, maturity, & goodwill. Others look at companionship & associated variables as defining a good marriage. Looks at partnership, teamwork, cooperation, collaboration, & coordination in couple centered tasks. Marital satisfaction & happiness may differ between spouses in both degree & kind. In classic studies, all happiness is assumed to be equal. There may be people who are happy because they get what they want vs. people that have deep committed friendships with partners.
