HDE 100B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Legal Drinking Age, Sensation Seeking, Impulsivity
Document Summary
There are generally four risk factors for substance abuse, which are psychological, familial, social, and contextual. These factors affect all adolescence equally, regardless of gender, socioeconomic status, or ethnicity. For psychological risks, those who are characterized by anger, impulsivity, inattentiveness, and sensation seeking are more prone to substance abuse. For familial risks, those who have distant, hostile, or conflicted relationships with their families are more prone to substance abuse. For social risks, people who abuse substances usually have friends that tolerate this kind of behavior. For contextual risks, those who develop this kind of behavior are more likely to live in environments that make substance abuse more convenient (drugs are more readily available, community is more accepting of drug use). There were a group of popular kids back in my high school who are known to party, drink, and do drugs.
