LIN 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Vowel Diagram, Front Vowel
Linguistics
Vowels:
• Vowls are a combination of 3 variables
1. Height
2. Backness
3. Rounding
• Height measures how close the tongue is to the roof of the mouth
-it also should be more open of the latter as in open or low or close of high
• Backness is the alternation between pronocning the vowls like it cat and like in cot
-the togue should be more forward for cat
-The togue is back for cot
-So there is the front vowel and the latter back vowel
• Rounding the lips should be puckered or spread out like in the /i/
-puckering=rounding
• Cardinal vowels-set of idealized vowels by phoneticians like a base reference
• The IPA orders the vowel in a similar way to the consonants, separating the three main
distinguishing variables into different dimensions.
• The vowel trapezoid may be thought of as a rough diagram of the mouth, with the left
being the front, the right the back, and the vertical direction representing height in the
mouth.
• Each vowel is positioned thusly based on height and backness.
