Central Nervous System Part 2!
The ear has three parts:
1. the outer ear or auricle
2. middle ear
3. inner ear.
The auricle is the visible part of the ear that collects sound waves and directs them into
the auditory canal.
The pituitary gland secretes hormones.
The brainstem helps transmit messages to organs from the brain.
The tympanic membrane separates the outer ear from the middle ear.
Sound waves cause it to vibrate.
The three tiny bones of the middle ear are:
1. the hammer or malleus,
2. anvil or incas
3. stapes or stirrup
These bones pick up the vibrations from the tympanic membrane and transmit them to
the inner ear.
The semicircular canals are fluid filled bony loops that help maintain our body’s balance.
The cochlea is a fluid filled snail shaped structure that houses the organ of Corti, the true
organ of hearing
