Lecture 20
Endogenous criteria
- Persists in absence of external cues
- Entrained to the local environment by external cues
- Their period is not affected much by temperatures
Feeding Behavior
- One of the most important aspects of animal behavior
Optimality Models
- Based on assumption that selection will favor individuals that maximize net energy intake
per unit time
- Therefore, individuals should make foraging patch choices, individual prey choices, and
other foraging related choices that maximize net intake per unit time
- Many examples
Prey-Dropping Behavior of Crows
- Carry hard shelled mollusks and other food up into the air
- Drop prey on hard surface
Behavior of crows foraging on whelks
- Test of the hypothesis that this behavior is optimal
Prediction
- Large whelks should be more likely to break than small ones after a drop of 5 meters
- Drops of less than 5 meters should be less effective
- Probability of breakage should be independent of number of drops
Net Energy Gain for Whelks:
- Large whelks
o Cost to open = 0.5kcal
o Energy from whelks = 2.0
o Net payoff = 1.5kcal
- Medium whelks
o Net payoff = -0.3
- Small whelks
o Even worse(< -0.3)

Document Summary

Entrained to the local environment by external cues. Their period is not affected much by temperatures. One of the most important aspects of animal behavior. Based on assumption that selection will favor individuals that maximize net energy intake per unit time. Therefore, individuals should make foraging patch choices, individual prey choices, and other foraging related choices that maximize net intake per unit time. Carry hard shelled mollusks and other food up into the air. Test of the hypothesis that this behavior is optimal. Large whelks should be more likely to break than small ones after a drop of 5 meters. Drops of less than 5 meters should be less effective. Probability of breakage should be independent of number of drops. Large whelks: cost to open = 0. 5kcal, energy from whelks = 2. 0, net payoff = 1. 5kcal. Medium whelks: net payoff = -0. 3.
