The level of normal after withdrawal and detox may still not be the same normal before substance abuse. Scare tactics for drug education is a large issue. Runner"s high is an acute instance, but drug high is from consistent drug use. Treatment protocols (opiates: no curative treatment for substance abuse, chronic problem you treat but never cure, basic goals. Many behavioral treatment programs are underfunded (alcohol abuse and other substance abuse: just because you"re an ex-addict doesn"t necessarily make you a good counselor or have the knowledge base required. Substance abuse is not distinct from other behavioral problems, and only recently are we beginning to realize this. Agonist maintenance approach: uses adjunct medical therapies along with behavioral therapies, treating substance abuse with a long acting agonist. Methadone just another opiate that we are taking in a way where we are not getting a huge high so you can go along doing your business, but not suffering from withdrawal symptoms.
