Document Summary

Basic unit of a protein is amino acids. Each protein has a unique aa sequence. Every protein is made by amino acids connected through peptide bonds. Amino acid order/sequence (r group) dictates structure***************** Nitrogen can be used to form/combine non-essential amino acids. Carbon skeleton is transformed into fat stores as triglycerides. All amino acids are organic compounds bc they contain carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen. What makes amino acids di erent is the r group. 20 di erent r groups (amino acids) make up proteins found in food and in the body. When there is a typo in a protein"s amino acid sequence, the protein would either not work or not do their function as well. ***9 of the 20 amino acids are essential: cant be made in the body, needed from diet. 11 of the 20 amino acids are non-essential: made from other items in the diet and source of n for humans.
