Displacement efect: when you are exposed to foreign cultures which inluences them and displaces any indigenous/ previous culturally held views. Why does culture mater for security issues: when you increase cultural heterogeneity this increases understanding of things about another culture, homogeneity > dominant cultures difusing throughout the world. See"s civilizaions as the highest cultural atachment a person can have. Disinguishes 8 civilizaions (in his book 9); members increasingly idenify with one another as a part of this civilizaional groupings; conlicts between disinct civilizaions: close connecion to religion. Conlicts are on the basis of civilizaional diferences. Entrenched ideniies- atached to and isn"t likely to change. Heterogeneity equals tension; the more interacion the more the diferences are intensiied. Modernizaion (economic development, etc. ) is a problem; losing touch with their roots creaing idenity gaps. Territorial control that allow them to be protected from other civilizaions.
