Culture a variable, open, and dynamic system of ideas, values, actions and practices. Questions: why is cross-cultural research interesting, aren"t we all human, major findings: culture does have a strong influence on our behavior and development. Cultural classifications: many ways to classify cultures for the purposes of research, traditional vs. Industrialized: individualist (ind) v. collectivist (col) cultures (a. k. a. Ind: focus on individual, seeks uniqueness, egalitarian, optimistic, self-enhancement, success = ability-based. Col: focus on group, seeks ordinariness, hierarchical, pessimistic, modesty, success = effort- based. Not categorical: a continuum: where do cultures lie on the ind-col continuum, west higher on ind and lower on col; These ways of viewing self have influence on parenting goals: greater emphasis on building independence (western, greater emphasis on fitting in, building consensus and harmony (eastern, influences styles of interacting with and disciplining children, and learning opportunities provided.
