Document Summary

From latin: sui caedere = to kill oneself (intentionally) More people are dying from suicide than homicide worldwide. Worldwide, about one million people die by suicide per year. Wanting to be dead vs. intent and plan. Males choose more violent and more lethal methods. Men are 4 times more likely than women to die from suicide. Those who kill themselves usually made at least one attempt before. Women make 3 x more suicide attempts than men (longer window to get rescued with pill overdose) Watch for changes in sociability, mood, eating, sleeping, etc. Unable to break the addiction and associated losses. Energy is first to return; yet not feeling better emotionally. Acute stressors, e. g. recent losses (of loved one, job, home) Abusive social environment (e. g. , domestic violence, bullying, sexual abuse) Subject to peer influence, strong capacity for identification, idealization. Happy partnership & having children are protective factors. Men tend to chose more violent and more lethal methods.
