Binge eating/purging- lose weight by self-induced vomiting, laxatives. Lifetime prevalence is 3. 5% women, 2% men of general population at great risk for obesity, type ii diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, other diseases associated with being overweight. Etiology of eating disorders: societal influences: cultural specific syndrome. Huang"s (2000) study of cultural values and eating disordered behaviors. Assessed ethnicity, ethnic identity, self-construals (sensitive way to look at culturals; independent and dependent) and their relationship to disorder eating habits. Independent construals- individualistics, independence, autonomy, self- reliance (western cultures) Interdependent construals- oriented towards group goals, dependent, reliant, value family, network relationships that are more important that personal values, wants, needs (asian cultures- collectivistic) Results: white: identification with wa culture and independent self-construals, positively associated with compensatory behaviors (e. g. fasting, laxative use, vomiting, exercise). No ethnic differences in weight concern or bingeing. Other etiological factors: maladaptive perfectionism, inflexible high standards, negative self-evaluations involving mistakes.
