Lecture 7 RESEARCH TOOLS OBSERVATIONS AND SURVEYS Outline Research Tools Observations o Types of observations o Construct validity Surveys o Writing the questions o Construct validity o Limitations Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth. Types of Observations Observing Actions o Classify covert behaviors. Can be naturalistic (in a natural setting). Can be systematic with a specific research purpose. Observing Performance o Performance on tests or tasks. Ex: Score people on how many correct answers they got right. Observing Archives o Info that was documented for other purposes. Digital footprints Ex: DMV records, tax records, etc. Records that are generated by your behavior. Construct Validity and Observations Are we validly observing behavior? What else is influencing o what we think we are seeing? o how we record what we think we see? o how the participants are behaving? Threats to construct validity 1. Observer Expectancy Observers may see what they expect to see Solutions: Make the observations objective and accurate. Clearly define the behaviors and use a simple checklist. Train the observers. o Always establish interrater reliability, o You cant only have one observer,
