Preservation and protection of habitat from degradation and loss. Sloss debate: single large or several small. High quality habitat across landscapes is often missing or inaccessible. Aims to re-establish the composition, structure, and function of an ecosystem. Ecological restoration is becoming a central management activity for many wildlife areas. Trajectory towards near-natural or near- original complexity. Gradual change in what we perceive as healthy ecosystems. Restoration to original ecosystem is often the goal. Lack of knowledge can limit effective actions. Reservation and restoration are being used concurrently. Often large-scale projects with state and federal agencies. Vernal pools on uplands; most of grassland invaded and exotic. Small areas of stream channel and broad seasonal floodplans. The science of inventing, establishing and maintaining new habitats to conserve species diversity in places where people live, work, and play. Sharing our habitat deliberately with other species. Surviving in an environment that is highly altered by humans. Step 1: identify issue/ problem of concern.
