Document Summary

Neoliberalism: decline in unions, outsourcing for manufacturing increases, cuts in public funds. Governing through crime, crime becomes centerpiece in how economies are regulated (like social problems, poverty) Rhetoric that if people had jobs they wouldn"t suffer from mental illness, etc. People caught in crimes because of the decline in welfare. Crack vs. cocaine sentencing -- class-race coding. Jess starts taking hormone injections to be able to pass as a man. Doctor was not helpful or informative about the hormones -- shady process, underground economy. Edwin, the other friend taking hormones, committed suicide. Trying to preserve dignity, feel okay living this way and still survive. Jess just wanted to go back after starting hormones. Health centers would criminalize and pathologize her. Went to women"s clinic to get yeast infection treated, not a regular doctor. Safe space because they were run by women, managed by women, and served women.
