Antimodernism - the rejection of hte moderm in favor of what is perceived as in earlier, purer, and better way of life. Fundamentalism: antimodernist movements that subscribe to the fundamental/founding principles of a religion. Mana = supernatural domain or life force, potential subject ot human manipulation. Belief that people are descendants of animals, plants, or geographical features. Refers to supernatural techniques intended to accomplish specific aims. Often used in situations of uncertainty or chance. Magic is used as a way of gaining or maintaining control. May or may not be associated with formal religious belief. Kalala fish usually arrive every few months at full moon shark fishing (rituals dealing with danger and uncertainty) Baseball has a lot of magic involved. Brought to the new world via the slave trade. Religion based on magic and ancestor worship healing practices constitute about 60% of the religious practices. Structuralist functionalist: religion provides individual and collective security, meaning, explanations, ethical/moral guidelines and purpose.
