Comte wanted to use the natural sciences as a model for the social sciences. Charles lyell - argued that the earth was 500,000 years old. Charles darwin was able to join the scientific expedition which traveled around the world from 1831 to 1836 on the hms beagle. Darwin returned to england in 1836 and develops his theory of natural selection in which she claims that species can change over time due to changing environments. Darwin finally publishes on the origin of species in 1859. The social scientist of the late 1800s become very interested in darwin"s ideas.
