Anthro 2a lecture 4 - april 25, 2018. Franz boas was against unilinealism and scientific racism. He argued that civilization was subjective and culturally relative. Each society had its own idea of what civilization actually is. He argued that each society had developed its own unique form of civilization based on its own unique history (historical particularism) He argued against unilinealism and promoted multilingualism . Civilization occurs in many different forms (multilingualism) He used the four fields of anthropology to promote multilingualism and argued against unilinealism. He used biological/ physical anthropology to demonstrate that all races are fully human. There are no biologically inferior human race. Humans are biologically very similar regardless of race . He used archaeology to show that all human that all human societies adapt and change over time. No society is stuck in the stone age. He used linguistic anthropology to show that all societies have developed complex language.
