Paul Broca
In the 19th century (1800s), most anthropologist claimed there were significant biological
difference between human races which they generally attributed to biological evolution
Paul Broca established the anthropological society of Paris in 1859 which was the same
year Darwin published “One the Origin of species”
Broaca claimed there was a hierarchy of human evolution anglo-saxons
Anglo-Saxons was on top and Australian Aborigines was on the bottom
Paul Broca used a number of researched approaches to try to “prove” European were
more evolved than other races
One example, Broca used was to compare relative forearm length between different racial
groups
Broca compared forearm lengths between samples from European, African, and Asian
population
The Asians in his sample had the shortest forearm length
Broca was disappointed
Broca tried comparing overall skull volume between sample from different populations
In his samples, the skulls which had the largest volume came from Mongolia
He then looked at skull length and claimed that longer skulls were evidence of higher
evolution supposedly had room for a larger frontal lobe
The longest skulls in his sample came from Africa
Broca tried comparing the placement of the skull foramen magnum
He argued a more forward position of the foramen magnum represented greater evolution
