a. Boys and Girls in village schools
a.i. Elementary School
a.i.1. Girls do better than boys
a.ii. Secondary School
a.ii.1. Boys do better than girls
a.ii.2. Why? Girls have to do chores whereas boys don’t have to.
b. Differing Parental Expectations for Sons and Daughters
b.i. Sons: to get higher levels of education and score high on standardized tests and get a government
job (high paying and stable)
b.i.1. Parents will endure long periods of unemployment for sons
b.ii. Daughters
b.ii.1. Stay at home until married (Before the factories)
b.ii.2. Now: factories are close by -> can still do chores at home
b.ii.3. Shift at factory and shift at home is stressful
b.ii.4. Delay marriage and starting families for the money from the factories
b.ii.5. Single young spiritually weak women not in their homes being protected by their
fathers. (Challenges male authority because the women now have leverage)
b.ii.6. Money is now handled by the women of the household
II) Factory
a. Employing a Female Workforce
a.i. Economic advantages:
a.i.1. Keep their labor costs low
a.i.1.a. This is temporary work: the cultural expectation is that the women will
get married and start a family
a.i.1.b. This constant labor turnover means no pay raises; no career development
a.i.2. Avoiding inefficiencies associated with deteriorating worker eyesight
a.i.2.a. Microscope ruins their eyesight
a.i.2.b. They get migraines
a.i.2.c. Right when their eyesight get really bad, they quit anyways
a.i.3. Can tap local structures of patriarchal authority to ensure worker compliance
a.i.3.a. They want docile bodies: won’t complain or argue
