State legislature in certain states have tried to make english as only language. Creates huge problems for people in the country: trying to eradicate any other language from public use. Is there really a problem that english only policies are solving: 92% americans speak english without difficulty, 89% americans are monolingual english speakers. Most other 11% speak english very well: very few people in us that can"t speak any english. English only policies are way to advocate racist ideologies without having to be held accountable for publicly promoting racism. Problems with logic: government (and other) business already conducted in english, education already conducted in english. With goal for everyone to learn english: multilingual services provided in critical circumstances. English not being replaced: cost of translation services very small. English only policies function as tools of exclusion. Non-english languages treated as dangerous: for white monolingual speakers who don"t understand. Inner sphere world of private life, intimacy, family and close community.
