ART HIS 42C Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Acala, Furuta Oribe, Wabi-Sabi
Document Summary
Wabi refers to a style of japanese tea ceremony associated with sen no rikyu. His aesthetic attitudes behind rikyu"s wabi tea can perhaps be best illuminated by his extensive use of bamboo as a material of choice for tea implements. Rikyu employed simple vases fashioned from a length of native bamboo. Tea was viewed as a tool of unification. Image 1 - furuta oribe (tea master), flower container - bamboo w/gold lacquer repair and metal pins. Image 2 - tea scoops by daishin gito, sen no rikyu, and seta kamon - each scoop is different and is a representation of their own personality. Daishin scoop - more robust and hopeful (thickest one closest to us) Kamon- more relaxed and generous (at the back of the photograph) He also went against the norm with his principles of using something that is imperfect and in danger of being disposed with and giving it a new purpose and in a sense be reborn.
