Document Summary

Ventricles help support the brain structure, help gives nutrients. Synapses are gray matter, myelinated stuff is white matter. Corpus callosum is a major landmark of the brain. Basal ganglia is emotion and motor function. Synaptic cleft is where two neurons meet. Neurotransmitter is specific to one type of cell. Sert (plasma membrane serotonin transporter) recycles and reuses unused neurotransmitter. Action potential is an electrical signal that starts in the cell body that fires at the axon hillock, sends signal down axon. Ca+ rushes into cell and helps vesicles fuse and release. Purpose of action potential is to release neurotransmitters. Ion channel and g coupled neuron receptor. Ion channels can be opened directly by neurotransmitter or indirectly by a g protein. Spatial summation is when multiple neurons are sending signals at the same time. Temporal summation is when one neuron is sending signal at high frequency. Motor output starts from the motor cortex.
